| Allergies? |
[30 Sep 2008|07:20pm] |
Gambit's paws are really really red. I feel terrible. They look so sore. The vet suspects it's allergies. He also itches at his ears a lot, so he is balding around his ears. I don't know what he's allergic to. It's been since we moved to our new house, so about a year now, although he has always had red eyes. Even when we lived at the apartment the vet was saying he had allergies. We have tried him on a different food (kangaroo - the idea being it is totally alien to his system) and he hated it, refused to eat, and we didn't notice a change. This summer, the vet put him on steroids but it just made him sleepy and grouchy and a bit sick to his stomach.
I don't know what to do, he seems so uncomfortable. I know bostons are often allergic, any idea what might be troubling my boy?

So once again, I'm posting about a little issue we have again with Violet. Jerry and I went to the gym and then out to lunch....we come home to find his change missing off the table. Violet jumped on top of our kitchen table and ate 8-9 coins. We had pushed it back towards the middle by a bowl not thinking anything would happen. So we made her an appt. to take her to the vet for an xray (i got there 45 minutes early) and it did come back that she has coins in her tummy. It looks like there are about 5 quarters and 1-2 pennies. We have surgery scheduled for tomorrow, but I'm already a nervous wreck because of her heart condition. Jerry and the vet talked about it and they said she'll be fine but I'm so scared of losing her. She got ahold of my mom's glasses too and even broke off a nosepiece, and thank God she didn't eat that.....but I just can't believe she had that many coins. The pennies were the vet's concern, but she said she'd be fine with the surgery being so early tomorrow morning. I just hope she doesn't have issues with the quarters in the mean time.
The vet said it's common, and I understand it's a simple surgery...I just don't want any seizures again or any other issues...I want my baby to be okay....it's fall in Cincinnati and this is the time where we drive around with the windows down and she can just enjoy the air blowing in her face.
Has any of this happened to any of your babies? The vet was telling us about a dog she sees that has had to have 5 surgeries because he keeps eating socks..... :-\
I'm so nervous for this surgery...I was scared when she got spayed.... I have been bawling since I got home and I have to go to Papyrus and close the store tonight, so I'm hoping I don't just randomly break down...we have 2 Boston terrier cards so I'm afraid I might. :-(

| Update on my Mama Meezer |
[29 Sep 2008|01:37pm] |
|
Well, I stayed home last Thursday and Friday because I was sick. Lucky I did because on Friday morning my mama meezer had a grand mal seizure that woke me and my husband up. She ran over the top of both of us on the bed and convulsed on the floor for a good 2 - 3 minutes. It was pretty scary.
She foamed at the mouth and had peed on the bed next to my husband before she ran off and started her seizure. I made sure she was okay - she was pretty dazed from the experience, and called my vet right away. We now have to give her liquid phenobarb twice a day for the rest of her life. My husband is worried about her quality of life and if we can keep up with dosing her twice a day. She absolutely HATES taking meds and fights us every time. So far she has been lethargic after her meds and she throws up after her evening dose, but the vet said it will take a couple weeks for her body to get used to the medication. She growls at the kittens whenever they come near and is a little skiddish around us, but that's to be expected. I'm sad that she had another seizure, but at least we have a way to control it. We may have to up her dosage and she could have "breakthrough seizures" once her body gets used to it, but at least we have a way to control it and don't just have to just "live with it." Now it's just getting used to having a "maintainance kitty," as my husband puts it. *sigh* I asked if it could happen with the kittens and unfortunately there is no real way of knowing if she has passed it on or not. At least now that we have one if another starts to show the same signs we just have to put that one into the same schedule as their mom. It's been pretty stressful, but I'm glad my mama girlie is going to be okay, well - medicated, but alright. I'll post some baby pics of her, since I still have yet to get the current pics off my camera :). ( Pics of baby Ayanami Rei :) )

Poor Daisy is all sleepy squishy face right now -- she has to get cortisone shots sometimes due to allergies, and the shots make her all tired out.
She was five years old on Saturday. She's almost middle-aged!

I was wondering if any dogs out there have stomachs that make loud growling/gurgling noises. This has been happening to mine for sometime now and I can’t figure out what it’s from. It normally starts up early in the morning about 3 or 4 and lasts at least until I leave for work around 8. I’d tried numerous remedies but the problem persists. Anyone?

| A Feral or Just a Stray |

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the whole stray cat business, actually to the whole cat business, and I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me how I can tell if a cat is just a stray or if it is Feral?
The friend that we have now, likes to sleep on our porch furniture at night, and we saw him (or her) lounging on one of the chairs this morning. I think he can see me when I put food out because it is always gone within the period of a few hours.
He is pretty skiddish and when he sees someone watching him, he will stare at us and then run off. But, he will always come back later. I think he might be living under a defunct car of our neighbor's.
Is there any way to tell? Also, I would love nothing more than to convert this little guy into a household pet. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks for your help!

This is our new foster, Hazel. I have a couple of questions about her and I'd appreciate your help!!

She was rescued from a backyard breeder who had so many pups, the state forced her to relocate them. Hazel is reportedly 7 months old, though we're suspicious of that. She has her adult teeth, weighs 13lbs (with very tiny features), has protruding nipples, and her female parts seem to be a little stretched. Could all of this be possible at 8 months?
She is also snippy with Penny. When we introduced them, she growled and lunged. It calmed down with clapping and loud NO's. We took her to an adoption event - a Woof-a-Palooza music/dog fest thing at the park today and she did pretty well. We took Penny since she's such a positive example of the breed. Toward the end (about 3 hours in), Hazel was just sleeping on my lap and Penny was next to us and she must have moved and Hazel woke up and instantly lunged onto Penny, put both of her paws on Penny's eyes and latched onto her jowles!!!!! Needless to say, we freaked out and screamed, which stopped it... she just seems to have really been startled. Penny was unharmed, though!
We're trying to give Hazel a fair shot at keeping her foster home with us. She LOVES human attention, is great with our 2 cats, and is reacting well to positive reinforcement. I think, coming from a breeder with a billion dogs, she's territorial and wants to assert herself. Penny mounted her from behind today to show some authority, but obviously Hazel still attacked her pretty viscously today. Does anyone have any suggestions???
Hazel really is a good dog and I don't mean to make her out to be anything other than sweet. She's already learned "sit" and "down" in 24 hours, lovessssss to cuddle, and really is warming up. I'm just concerned about the aggression and how to handle it.
For good measure, and because she's sooo cute, here are some more photos!

| Doggy depression. |
[28 Sep 2008|07:05pm] |
|
My boyfriend and i just recently lost our Boston terrier Makki, we have another one that is about the same age as him that we got as a rescue, from what we understand from the previous owner, Pizzy or "piggy" as we like to call her has never been with out other dogs. Now that Makki is gone we are finding out that she is having a hard time adjusting to being alone in the house. I usually work the early shift so i'm usually home after 3 and corey usually doesn't go to work until about 8-9 so that leaves her in the house alone for about 7 hours or less depending on my schedule. I've been out of work for about a month now due to complications with a kidney infection so she really hasn't been caged since then and its only been about 2 weeks since we had to put makki to sleep, but it was friday that i went in and when i came home she was howling so loudly i could hear her outside the house with my stereo on and her room is in the basement. she's been so depressed lately that i've had to hand feed her and give her water out of a drinking glass. i'm so worried about her because she doesn't seem like the same pizzy since makki's been gone. corey and i want to get another baby but were not sure if a male or a female would be the best or what we should even do. i'm not sure if we are ready to get another one so soon but i hate the way piggy is acting.

One of the more bizarre things I've come across lately. This lady pairs a Days of our Lives storyline (usually involving Jack Deveraux) with a song.

( this is a sick, sad dog who might get better if we all believe )
I'm in Greece. There are a lot of strays but one reallly touched my heart. He's really sick. He (and the other strays) hang out at the restaurants looking for scraps from the tourists.
There was one dog in particular that touched my heart so I gave some scraps and asked the restaurant workers if they had some scraps. Unfortunately, everything was in the garbage and no one was willing (myself included) was willing to dive in and get some.
I asked a young server who spoke excellent English (enthusiastically) if there was somewhere that I could buy this dog some food. Fortunately, there was a shop two doors down so I bought two cans. I gave him one can but I didn't realize how much food there was and it over flowed the bowl. I gave him some water from my water bottle and then the little doggie took a nap.
I gave the other can to Yannis who promised to instruct Ilias to feed the dog a little bit each day plus give him fresh water.
I've called twice and both times Yannis and Ilias said that the dog is doing much better. I think that they were stretching the truth to make me feel better. I offered to send money so they could buy more dog food but they said that they would give him scraps from the restaurant.
I am hoping that this gentle but sick dog is still alive. He had the look in his eyes like he needed help and I stepped to it.
If you're visiting Greece please reward the restaurant workers' kindness by eating at their restaurant or bar. They also run a hotel.
Sons Anast Theodorakakis S.A. 230 71 Gerolimmenas Laconia Greece
Their website is: Gerolimmena Hotels, apartments, restaurant, and bar
It would be great if you want to send them a thank you note or postcard to encourage them to continue feeding this dog. They don't want money but everyone likes to hear that they're doing something good.
